At Theoria Designs, we don't simply arrange plants and materials, we design & build landscapes that support life. Each project begins with listening & observation. Our design process begins with exploratory conversations with our clients about their aspirations, lifestyles, and the connection that they have or want to have with the land that they steward. We pair this with a deep reading of their site's unique ecological patterns, history, and untapped potential. This conversational & collaborative approach ensures we create regenerative landscapes that not only fulfill the short-term desires of our clients, but also enhances their property's ecological vitality & beauty for generations to come.
We design landscapes where memories are made and relationships deepen. From intimate conversation nooks to gathering spaces for celebrations, our client focused designs create the backdrop for life's most important moments. Sensory elements—fragrant plants, visual focal points, textural diversity, and sound—engage visitors on multiple levels, creating immersive experiences that change with the seasons and the years.
We design landscapes that blend beauty with functionality, creating spaces that nourish both body and soul. We apply regenerative principles to food gardens, orchards, and animal husbandry that produce abundance while building soil health. Whether you're seeking food security, personal enjoyment, or the experience of harvesting your own produce, our homestead & production designs become more fertile & resilient over time.
We design landscapes that restore ecological relationships & create thriving habitat mosaics, by carefully curating native & regionally appropriate plant communities. With the return of beneficial insects, birds, & wildlife, our nature-based designs become more resilient & complex over time, requiring less maintenance while contributing to regional biodiversity - providing you time to enjoy a dynamic, ever-changing sanctuary within Creation.
Our landscape and garden designs create harmonious connections between people and place. With a thoughtful exploration of your site's unique character, we blend timeless design principles with ecological wisdom to craft outdoor spaces that captivate the senses while supporting the natural world within and beyond your property lines.
Beyond ordinary landscaping, our Legacy Property Planning creates a multi-generational vision for your land. We design and implement comprehensive plans that enhance both ecological function and human experience, ensuring your property becomes more valuable—environmentally, financially, and emotionally—with each passing year.
One of our best, this project raised the bar for the neighborhood, where rock mulch & sparse planting reigned supreme. We utilized industry best practices to rehabilitate severely compacted soil; created contours for interest, plant niches, & privacy; and, planted a few thousand bulbs, a few hundred plants, & seeded three different custom seed mixes. We worked with a local stone mason to complete the rock work, designing & coordinating a custom gas fire pit to match the dry-stack stone walls.
For a client who had a strong desire to see their property contribute to repairing habitat loss for birds & pollinators, we renovated their backyard into an accentuated dry-land shrub steppe, complete with a rock outcropping for smaller alpine plants. Instead of maintaining a verdant lawn & shrub border, they now spend their days enjoying the quiet hum of life present in their yard for much of the year, and are free to travel during their retirement without concern for a lawn that needs regular mowing & attention.
At the time of purchase, this property was a fallow field with invasive weeds. With an intention to leave a legacy for their daughter, we worked with the client to develop a long-term vision for the property - phasing the work over the course of a ten year plan. We repaired the abused soil, re-introduced native plant species, & created a sense of arrival to the main house. Strategic planting shields the property from the wind, sun, and neighbors, while framing dramatic views of the valley.
The clients for this project built a high performance house and felt that the landscape should reflect the same values & effort. We built a 'fire' palette meadow in the front yard to play on the shou sugi ban siding of the house; an ample production & cut-flower garden in the backyard; and, a rockery as a miniature mountain-scape to be enjoyed while resting between rounds in the sauna (You should see it covered in snow!), providing the client with a private botanical garden in the heart of the City.
